For children, traditional braces with metal wires and colorful brackets can be a mark of distinction. For adults, not so much. This doesn’t mean, however, that adults who didn’t have braces during childhood can’t have orthodontics now. They just might want to do so in a more discreet manner. With Invisalign®, Dr. Paul Caputo in Naperville, IL, gives adults the straight smiles they’ve always wanted.
Instead of metal wires and brackets, Invisalign® uses clear plastic aligners to straighten teeth. Made of clear BPA-free plastic, these aligners gradually shift teeth into their proper position. And because they are clear, no one other than you and Dr. Caputo may realize that you are wearing braces.
The Invisalign® Procedure
Once Dr. Caputo determines that you are a qualified candidate for orthodontics—meaning you have healthy teeth and gums—then the two of you will meet to discuss your smile goals and how Invisalign® can help you achieve those goals. Then, we’ll take x-rays, photographs and impressions of your teeth that Invisalign® will use to create a 3D image. From this image, Dr. Caputo creates a treatment plan to show you how your teeth will move. The Invisalign® lab will use this plan as a blueprint for fabricating your custom aligners.
Your Invisalign® aligners will arrive as a series of sets. Simply wear each set for about two weeks and then move on to the next set. You’ll need to wear your aligners all day every day, removing them only to eat and drink, brush and floss. As you progress through the series, you’ll see your teeth gradually move and your smile will take on a new look. At the end of treatment, which usually takes around one year, you’ll have straight teeth and a beautiful smile.
